48% of French people use generative AI: your visitors already know how to talk to a chat
The share of French people using generative AI grew 2.4-fold in two years. What that changes for the chat on your website.
A few years ago, a chat on a website mostly meant rigid menus and answers that missed the point. Your visitors have since picked up other habits.
Now the majority among young adults
According to the 2026 Baromètre du numérique, carried out by CREDOC for Arcep, Arcom, the Conseil général de l’économie and ANCT, 48% of people in France aged 12 and over used generative AI in 2025. Among users, ChatGPT is the most used tool, at 63%.
| Year | Generative AI users |
|---|---|
| 2023 | 20% |
| 2024 | 33% |
| 2025 | 48% |
What it changes for your site
- Your visitors ask questions in full sentences, not keywords. A chat has to understand “Are you open on Saturday?” as a question about your opening hours.
- They expect a precise answer, based on your actual offers, not a link back to the home page.
- They know they are talking to an AI, and accept it all the more readily when it says so clearly.
The limit to keep in mind
Just over half of people do not use generative AI yet. A chat has to stay simple for them: one question, one answer, and a clear way to be called back by a person.
